Conservation is at the Core of Who we Are

In keeping with our National organization, at the Rockville chapter conservation is what we do. Our member volunteers are very active with these programs and more. New members are encouraged to get involved with conservation. Below is a small sampling of some of the conservation activities in which we are involved. Look at the calendar for date and times for Adopt A Road and Wood Duck box cleaning.

  • Adopt A Road—Chapter members cleanup Waring Station Road from Clopper Road to past the entrance to our Chapter House bimonthly.
  • We support the Maryland Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation in their efforts towards restoring American Chestnut trees to the wild. Our Chestnut Orchard is one of many in Maryland.
  • We maintain several pollinator gardens on the property and support the use of Maryland native plants in landscapes
  • We monitor Great Seneca Creek on our property using the League’s Save Our Stream protocol. Check the calendar for the next event. Open to the public. SSL hours opportunity.
  • We are part of the American Tree Farm system. Our apiary is where our member beekeepers maintain their honeybee hives, producing honey as a forest product available to our Rockville Chapter members.
  • As part of our Chapter's long-standing Wood Duck Conservation Program, members go wood ducking every January. We clean, monitor and maintain over 70 Wood Duck boxes in Montgomery County, MD along the Potomac River and share our results with the Maryland Wood Duck Initiative.
